Can you find a match in this seemingly man-friendly Sydney suburb?
It didn’t even occur to me as I blithely sped along with my friends Sally, Michael and Sarah, that I may have been heading to Australia‘s man-meeting epicenter. With a name like Manly, how could this place be anything but perfect for finding guys? So what did I find? Guess you’ll have to read on now, won’t you?
Manly is an adorable little beach town in North Sydney. In fact, it reminds me of Santa Monica, Calif. with its promenade, short walk to the beach, upscale clothing stores and bar scene. I’m shamefaced to say that I didn’t get a chance to talk to many bonafied hotties in the name of research (I was too busy catching up with a separate set of friends from my days living on Martha’s Vineyard, Tabitha, Jim and Mel) but I did get the lay of the land, so to speak.
As is typical with most of the guys I’ve seen strutting around the beach (NOT wearing budgie smugglers — Aussie speak for Speedos/banana hammocks), the men in Manly didn’t disappoint. The volleyball players, surfers and skateboarders were all unbelievably gorgeous. You won’t have to look long and hard (oh behave!) to find a hottie here. But where should you look?
In addition to spending time on the beach, you might want to hit a few different places. #1 on the list is the Manly Surfing School. I would have done some research here, but Im an admittedly terrible swimmer. Doggie paddling is the name of the game, as far as I’m concerned. But I digress…The surf instructors here are all beautiful and all very helpful when it comes to getting you steady on your feet. Do watch out though please — some of the surfers are taken, and you don’t want to be ‘that girl.’
Otherwise, you can always hang out at the ferry to see the cuties from the city getting off of work; they tend to head to Hugo’s for an after-work cocktail. If yummy drinks and men in suits are your thing, head here.
If you want to see a staggering amount of men in one place, head to The Steyne Hotel. In addition to having great drink specials and ocean views, The Steyne can also be a little aggressive on the weekends. Drunken Aussies do tend to get into fights here late-night after too much to drink and too little sense. Typical men.
Last but not least is the Manly Wharf Hotel. The bar is great for daytime drinking and doesn’t discriminate — you’ll not only find Aussies hanging here, but Brits, Irishmen, Kiwis and South Africans as well. Who doesn’t love speaking the international language? At least you’ll have options!
So at the end of the day, I’m sure that there are far superior places to meet men around the world than Manly, Australia, but I do have to applaud the town’s effort. Good show, boys!
