… you get what you need

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” has always been on my desert-island disc list of top five favorite songs of all time. The Rolling Stones’ lyrics flit through my head at random times, but most typically when something good yet unexpected has occurred. I look at this song as a sign: although I thought I should be doing, feeling, thinking something else — I got what was right for me in the long run. After all, everything happens for a reason…

Although this song can be applied to everything in life, I’ve noticed that it has a special resonance when it comes to love. In the past, I’ve realized that the bad boy I’d been obsessing over wasn’t right for me — and then found that good guy who would treat me a thousand times better just in the nick of time. Or, after going through a craptastic breakup, I found the perfect rebound relationship at the perfect time.

Don’t you find that this kind of stuff happens to you, too? Do you believe that everything will work out as it should in the end? The universe sometimes has a funny way of presenting itself, but inevitably the choices we make will lead us to the path we were meant to be on in the first place.

Did I really want to be involved with the bad boy? Probably not. Would I have had my heart completely broken and gotten in way over my head had we actually dated? With a doubt. Did I need something to distract me from a really bad breakup in the form of a sweet, doting, sexy guy who didn’t want a girlfriend? Definitely.

Have faith that your life will work out the way it should, and don’t sweat the small stuff. When it comes to love, all you need to do is put yourself out there and when the right one comes along, you’ll know.

After all, the one you want might not be right for you. As for the right one,  I’ll let the Stones say it best: ”But if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need.”
