Weird news of the day
It is weird, even for me, who does not even remotely enjoy weddings to hear that a couple tied the knot over Skype. Is romance dead, people? Don’t answer that…because I really don’t want to hear the answer.
Last year, Mahmoud Mohammed Abdul Hafez was happily living in Alexandria, Egypt with his fiancé, Somaia, excitedly planning their wedding.
However, this April, the 30-year-old accountant lost his lost his job and was forced to take a job in Dubai, thousands of miles away from the love of his life.
But instead of just meeting up in the middle somewhere, or Mahmoud returning home to Egypt, the two invited their friends to watch them get hitched over Skype. FAIL.
Mahmoud told the 7Days newspaper: “We got engaged in February 2011 and our plan was to wed by the end of the year. When I lost my job, everything changed.
“When I got my job, the first thing on my mind was to get the wedding done and silence all the critics. I didn’t want to delay it because my fiancé was getting worried, too.”
I get that he was afraid of losing the job he had fought so hard for and was afraid to ask for time off, but really? Not even for your own wedding? Couldn’t you just wait? It’s not like you’ll actually physically be together, anyway.
“I am now happily married,” Mahmoud told the newspaper.
Even more happily, he’ll actually have a real ceremony by year’s end when he takes his annual leave.
But for those gals who need to have the dream wedding, I must say this: a wedding day, ostensibly, should only come once. Why waste that precious moment by saying ‘I do’ over the computer?
