Where should you go if you’re single and ready to mingle?

I’m not going to sugar-coat this for you, and I’m sure you won’t be surprised, but I absolutely loathe New Year’s Eve. Not to sound sour, but there’s so much anticipation, so much effort, into ringing in the New Year in style that inevitably, the night itself is a bit of a letdown.

I know it sounds like I’m a bit of a bah humbug, but really, isn’t it hard to disagree? If you decide to go to a bar, you have to fight crowds and fork over some serious moolah in the name of unlimited drinks and a promised (though infrequently executed) rockin’ party. There’s the care that goes into picking just the right dress, which WILL be spilled on and nine times out of ten, ruined, by 12:01 AM January 1.

If you’re single, you’re going to double your efforts to make your NYE perfect while you’re on the hunt for your dream man — or at least your dream man of the evening.

So what can you do to lessen the pain of a horrific Dec. 31, and where should you go on your hunt for love?

The hands-down winner here is a house party. Whether it’s thrown by friends or a friend of a friend doesn’t matter, as long as there are enough people there that you know in order to feel comfortable and enough of those you don’t in order to make some new acquaintances. Call everyone you know like, now. In theory, a nightclub or a bar may sound like a good idea, but you’ll be thanking me at the end of the night when you wake up with the realization that you didn’t have a miserable time.

Of course, there are some places around the world that you’ll be more likely to have fun at than others.

At the end of the day, your New Year’s goal is to be happy, right?

Well then, start as you mean to go on!

Here are the cities you should visit and those you should avoid:

GO!

  • New Orleans, Louisiana¬†
  • Edinburgh, Scotland for Hogmanay
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Aspen, Colorado

RUN FAR, FAR AWAY

  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • New York City (unless you can find a good house party, that is)
  • Miami, Florida
  • Kansas City, Missouri
  • Wichita, Kansas (both named as the two top worst cities for dating in 2012)
