Vow to make someone else happy

Before we discuss anything of importance, let’s get this out of the way, shall we? Happy Valentine’s Day! May you spend the day sucking face with the human of your dreams over bottles of bubbly and boxes of bon bons. Amen. more…

It’s origins make for a nice story, but then again, so do fairytales

I’m just going to go right ahead and put it out there, because I’m trite, trivial and all those other good T words: Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday. I know that guys think so because they’re forced to buy stupid gifts like pink teddy bears (or forced to walk into Victoria’s Secret all shame-faced to buy a different kind of teddy entirely) and all single girls think so because we’re not getting those lame ass stuffies (or sweet ass lingerie). This dichotomy pretty much sums up how Valentine’s day actually came to be…and why we all might hate it, but secretly, in our heart of hearts, actually kind of love it as well. more…

Love locks

This is what young Italian couples are doing to express their amore…

Most people have pretty standard practices of showing they love someone. Guys bring flowers, women cook a special dinner, both sexes give impromptu massages (though that’s not necessarily about adoration and devotion, FYI). You will find love internationally — even if it is with an American

And if it has and you feel like sharing the good will, pass it along! Let me know if you’ve found love abroad, and if it’s lasted. I may just clap my hands, because I believe. more…

Kristine Gasbarre explores how Americans are different from their international counterparts in her new book How to Love an American Man: A True Story

I apologize in advance for writing this so close to our most patriotic holiday, but I have never, ever had a thing for American men. It’s no secret that I’ve always thought I’d end up with a Brit. All that rubbish about ghastly teeth and a frigid demeanor is all BS. Sure, Brits are cool – it takes longer to crack the surface — but I’ve found that when I go for an American with a similar exterior, he just ends up being cold. So, given my Anglophilia, I’m probably not the best person to comment on why American boys are so damn great. It’s a good thing, then, that Kristine Gasbarre can do the job for me. In her new book, How to Love an American Man: A True Story, the author explores who the American guy is, and why you should love him. Unfortunately for my Englishman-loving self, none of these qualities actually appeal. But they might to you — so read on if you like nothing better than a guy with a thing for barbecuing, baseball and boobs. more…
